Description
Many vegetables and flowers need a head start indoors before they can go outside. A propagator gives seeds the warm, humid air they need to germinate.
The propagator is a low tray with a clear dome on top. Sunlight comes in through the dome and warms the air inside. The dome keeps that warmth and the moisture in. Under these conditions, seeds germinate about two weeks earlier than in an open tray.
Too much moisture causes mold. That is why there are two sliding vents in the top. Open them a little when you see drops on the inside of the dome. Close them on cold nights. As the seedlings grow, open the vents further so they get used to drier air.
The propagator measures 38 by 24 centimeters and is 19 centimeters high. It fits on a standard windowsill of eighteen centimeters deep.
Start tomatoes, peppers and chilies in February or March. Herbs like basil and summer flowers follow in April.
Fill the tray with seed compost, or place the seed trays, 5 pieces, inside it.
